What to Expect During a Commercial Electrical Estimate

A breakdown of the estimating process from takeoff to final proposal.

As a project manager and estimator, I've seen many projects succeed or struggle based on the accuracy of the initial estimate. A thorough commercial electrical estimate involves much more than counting outlets.

1. The Takeoff

We start by quantifying every component: conduit, wire, boxes, fixtures, panels, and specialized equipment. Digital tools help, but experience is needed to spot missing details in the drawings.

2. Labour Analysis

Labour units are applied to each task. Installing a light fixture at 20 feet on a lift takes significantly longer than one at 8 feet. Site conditions, complexity, and schedule constraints all impact labour hours.

3. Quotes and Subcontracts

Getting accurate quotes for switchgear, lighting packages, and fire alarm systems is vital. We coordinate with suppliers to ensure lead times align with the project schedule.

By understanding these steps, clients can better appreciate the value of a detailed, well-planned proposal.
